Manager - The Northern Tavern

Invercargill, New Zealand

Lead one of Invercargill’s iconic hospitality venues and make your mark.

The Northern Tavern  is a popular suburban sports bar with a loyal local following, great bar meals, TAB and gaming facilities. It’s a busy seven-day operation with plenty happening throughout the week. Alongside it, The Saucy Chef offers à la carte dining in a relaxed setting, seating around eighty guests across two dining areas, a recently renovated bar and conservatory with great indoor-outdoor flow.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on hospitality Manager to lead the Northern Tavern and The Saucy Chef. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys leading people, driving a successful business and creating a place customers want to keep coming back to.

As Manager, you’ll be right amongst the day-to-day operation of the businesses. You’ll lead and develop the team, deliver a great customer experience, drive sales and profitability, manage costs and look for opportunities to keep both businesses moving forward.

We’re looking for someone who knows hospitality, understands the numbers and isn’t afraid to get stuck in when it’s busy. You’ll enjoy building relationships with our loyal locals while also finding new ways to attract customers and grow the businesses.

This is a varied hospitality role across a seven-day operation, including weekends and key events, so flexibility is important.

If you’re ready to take ownership of a well-established Invercargill venue and bring your own energy and ideas to the role, we’d love to hear from you.

Applicants will demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to lead a large team and bring our vision to life.
  • Proven management experience within the hospitality sector, ideally in a busy tavern, bar or large venue.
  • Strong operational knowledge, including staffing, rostering, wage control, stock management, compliance and financial performance.
  • Commercial awareness, with the ability to drive revenue, manage costs and improve profitability.
  • A strong customer focus and a clear understanding of what fantastic service looks like.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with staff, customers and key stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and stay calm in a fast-paced environment.
  • The confidence to make decisions, take ownership and be accountable for the performance of the venue.
  • Experience coaching, developing and motivating a team to achieve high standards.
  • A sound understanding of host responsibility and the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
